>> reporter: we're live in campbell where more than 60 firefighters are on the scene of a fire at a commercial building. we'll have the latest on what is happening at this hour. a new storm is knocking on our door. i'll have what we can expect for christmas day -- coming up. stormy weather caused some big trouble sunday night. today's rain is raising new concerns about flooding on the

peninsula. >> reporter: something warm to eat and something warm to wear. the preparations underway for a big giveaway in san francisco this morning. "mornings on 2" starts now. good morning, everybody. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm brian flores. dave clark has the morning off. >> good morning. i'm pack cook. tori campbell is off today. it's -- i'm pam cook. it it tori campbell is off today. a christmas morning fire in the south bay. it started a few hours ago. janine de la vega is on the scene and joins us from campbell. how does it look out there, janine? >> reporter: well, the fire is out here at this commercial building on del avenue. firefighters are still putting water on it. you can actually see the smoke still rising in the air coming from that building. now, originally we were told

that the firefighters had not entered the building yet for safety precautions. let's go to some video. here you can see some flames shooting from the roof. we were told they were 50 feet up in the air at one point. firefighters were called to the scene just before 5:00 a.m. they immediately started to attack it from the outside. the fire then grew to three alarms. firefighters put up three aerial ladders to spray on the scene. >> we can see there's an engineering. in the back is where the fire was at. we're not sure what is inside, what type of businesses. >> reporter: one of the businesses is called mccalman engineering. the other we're told is a startup tech firm. it's unclear the extent of the damage. but in the last few minutes, i did see the business owners pulling out. they were -- firefighters were

pulling out electronic equipment from inside the building and handle it over to their business owners. we know that 60 firefighters are still out here on the scene from santa clara county fire and san jose fire is assisting as well. police are os here on the scene blocking -- police are also here on the scene blocking off the fire. reporting live from campbell, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, janine. we're back on stormwatch. more rain is moving in today. it will soak the already saturated soil. because we're getting wind, too, we could see trees topple over. rosemary is here with what we can expect today. yes, good morning to you. the main event coming in this afternoon but already ahead of the main event, seeing some scattered showers. falling over parts of the north bay. shifting east.

take a look at santa rosa. definitely moderate enough to actually hit the ground. the lighter returns we saw earlier this morning, now becoming heavier over winds ooh, santa rosa, glen ellen. if it's not hitting the ground in your area, it's priming the atmosphere to do so. pittsburg, antioch, clayton, walnut creek. mainly cloudy conditions overhead. now we're looking at rain clouds. the big system will be in time for the second half of your day, including moderate to heavy rain, winds and the possibility of isolated storms. i will break it down for you in a little bit. crews spent christmas eve shoring up a levee along san fran sisco creek -- francisco creek. the sand bags are expected to hold back water until the project to rebuild the levee

begins next wall. the drivers involved in a head-on collision have been taken to the hospital. the chp says a car going on the wrong way slammed into an approaching car. that happened on 101 right at the dump. that's just north of san rafael. >> upon arrival on our scene, we found two vehicles, one on the right shoulder. one in the center divide, both with manger front-end damage. >> investigators believe that alcohol did play a factor in that crash. all lanes have reopened on 880 near fruitvale in oakland. at least three vehicles were involved in the crash there. that happened at just about 5:30 this morning. all lanes were blocked for about an hour while crews worked to clean that up. so far, no word of injuries. 7:05 now. happening now, a little bit of good news. a holiday meal filled with kindness and good cheer. for the past 90 minutes, volunteers have been preparing

the annual christmas feast at st. anthony's and that's where allie rasmus is live. >> reporter: good morning. everyone who comes in for a holiday meal is also going to get a little christmas gift. we're standing in the hobby of the st. anthony's foundation where you can see volunteers here putting together gift bags. they are expecting 4,000 people to walk through these doors today for a christmas meal and everyone coming in will get a gift bag filled with toiletries and a hand-knit scarf. st. anthony's put owl calls to volunteers and members of the country. you can see there's lot of work that these volunteers have already done and there's still much more to go. next to this is the kitchen. this is the kitchen where they are preparing the holiday meal. it's a little busy. we don't want to distract them. let's show you the video. people in the community donated

400 hams that will be cooked this morning along with all of the other trimmings for the traditional christmas meal. in and helping them serve the meal will be coaches and members of the military team. >> for these guys to have the military team here, it's a real connection. >> reporter: this is just the first round of volunteers packing up these gift bags. this isn't even all of the scarfs and hats that they have. there is an entire truckload of bags like this outside waiting to be brought in. but the volunteers are still working on putting these gift bags together. again, 4,000 of them will go out to all of the 4,000 people expected to get a christmas meal. the navy football players in town for the caste bowl will help out the volunteers by

cooking the christmas meals who come in today. live in san francisco, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. >> looks very busy. netflix says many customers are still experiencing problems with its video streaming service. on the twitter feed, networks calls it terrible timing since so many people spend holidays watching movies with family and friends. they are trying to fix the problem but it apparently is from amazon. there's no time line when it can be fixed. terrible timing, yeah. >> i'll say. a lot of people counting on watching movies. a lot of people maybe are up now, 7:00 a.m. and headed off to grandma's house or auntie's house. let's check in with tara. see how the roads look. >> they are looking pretty good. just got a tweet from john. he said why are you working? there's never any traffic on

christmas. but there is. and we have drunk drivers. we dent expect a whole lot of -- we don't expect a whole lot of traffic throughout the day. let's take a look live at the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see traffic moving nice into san francisco at this hour. at the going bridge sort of the same story of the sun coming up here. smooth sailing. down 680 at the sunol grade this is the fremont area, you can see that traffic is moving very well in both directions. 7:09. rosemary, how is it going? >> good morning well, the gray skies are becoming thicker and now embedded within those gray skies. we have some rain. a few spotty showers in the forecast for some morning hours and now the model wants to bring a little bit of a steady rain, a little bit sooner. we'll take a look at that in just a moment. we have all of the doppler radars working for you. this is where i'm seeing a line of light to moderate rain.

you can see hit or miss around the area. some of this not hitting the ground. we're talking about virga here. but it will. this line, definitely a possibility along highway 101 between healdsburg and santa rosa, it will get worse as the morning/afternoon progresses. if you do need to be traveling today, this is definitely the better bet. tough for me to get that out. there you can. we shift to the east a little bit to antioch, bay point, clayton, perhaps a few light showers here and then mill pete, sunnyvale, reporting rain -- milpitas, sunnyvale, reporting rain showers. earlier in the morning, the models kept the rain out, until noontime. it was hitting santa rosa. now it looks like closer to 9:00. see this here? 9:00 over the north bay sliding into in and around san jose perhaps by about noontime. so this is going to come ahead of the main event.

light showers, a possibility now through the morning hours, early half of the afternoon. by 1:00, the front is moving through the north bay. had is when we'll see the gustiest -- this is when we'll see the gustiest winds. 2:00, 3:00, it's now shifting. by 4:00 into the south bay. 5:00 we're all wet and then scattered showers will remain for your christmas night. hate to be the bearer of bad news especially if you are getting a bike this year. it may be tough to get outdoors and ride. your extended forecast. rain and wind with us. we do have sierra snow. a winter storm warning. morning showers tomorrow. finally going to break away to some dry weather and it's going to last more than a day. increasing clouds friday into saturday. the models may bring us a shower or want to bring us a shower or saturday morning. i will be tracking that for you. all in all, definitely a drier forecast once we get past this storm. back to you. snowshoers, forced to spend

happy holidays to you. our quiet weather turning quite active into the afternoon. moderate rain expected along with breezy conditions and the possibility of isolated thunderstorms. a group of snowshoers is home safe after getting lost in oregon's mount hood. the group had to san jose a makeshift shelter and call for help. laura rios was there. >> reporter: welcomed sight this christmas eve. carrying three snowshoers back

to their families after two nights in the elements on mount hood. mark kelsey, margarita its strada and debra schindler set out on know shoes saturday morning with plans to camp in a hut that night for one of their birthdays. instead, they found the trail will washed out during the summer from flooding. >> the reality with that, the trail doesn't exist. we had to make our trail and that's what kept us out there longer, kept us pushing harder. we were across streams. >> reporter: cell phone was spotty but the group was able to call 911 sunday afternoon and give their gps coordinates. search teams set out that day but had to turn back because of bad weather. so the trio, all experienced, spent the night in a makeshift shelter near a tree. members of the group were moved to tears when talking about the moment rescuers found them four miles down the canyon from the highway. >> they were like angels coming down the road. they were because i really thought we were done.

we had no more propane. very little food and just one chance to make one call. and thank god we got through. >> the irony, is i put in 18 years with mountain rescue and i get to deal with the fact that mountain rescue rescued me, came to help our group out. i can work with the irony of that later. >> reporter: for now, the focus is on making up lost time on their families. >> he's usually so punctual. the moment he didn't come home when he was supposed to, i was yes -- i was so upset with him. i never hear the end if i don't tell him where i am all of the time. i'm gonna milk it for as much as i can. i'm happy he's back. >> good ending to that story there. crews in marin county, called off the search for a drunk driving suspect. we were telling you about that yesterday, the one who jumped into corte madera creek.

after several thundershowers, authorities found no sign of the suspect seen swimming away from the officers. ross police say he ran from them when he ran from a field sobriety test. the man jumped into the creek. an officer followed him in the water and lost sight of him in the dark. a family of a teenager killed by a zoo will hold a special ceremony for him. carlos souza, was killed by that tiger, tatiana. the zhu has settleled lawsuits with the family and his two friends. the exhibit is new a glass enclosure. a woman has been charged with manslaughter. prosecutors say she was intoxicated last thursday when

she drove a group into four pedestrians pushing them down a sleep slope. a 57-year-old died from the injuries. two other people are injured but are expected to survive. uc berkeley are investigating after shots were fired on campus. no one was hurt but the incident happened around 7:30 on monday night. campus police say a group of young people, they were arguing when one person fired three shots. the group ran from the scene but some of them were later taught. now, police say they also recovered a gun. a warning this morning about a rash of cell phone thefts on muni buses in san francisco. police say three people reported their phones stolen in recent days, while riding muni and getting off the bus. officers say a woman on the sunset blues was talking on her phone -- bus talking on her phone when a man grabbed it from her. and this happened to other people on san bruno avenue. and then a teen was robbed on

another bus near san bruno avenue. firefighter departments in contra costa county have received a new state of the art live safing tool. 72 heart monitors were given thanks to a grant by fema and. the technology allows firefighters in the field to detect heart attacks and communicate with hospitals to prepare for immediate assistance. firefighters will begin using the systems in the field on january 1st. governor jerry brown gave dozens of former inmates a holiday gift. on christmas eve, he pardoned 79 people who competed their sentences and had not reoffended within the last decade. most of those pardons were low- level offenses. they will be pardoned to serve on juries an in some cases own firearms. under the revised three strikes law, in november, voters approved prop 36 which requires that a life sentence only be given for a third felony if it's a serious or violent crime. about 3700 prisoners may

welcome back. san jose police are helping to make this christmas a little brighter for some children. officers loaded up their patrol cars yesterday with dozens of gift bags filled with toys. the gifts were given specifically to children who really need the holiday cheer. >> we're seeing people at their worst a lot of times. a lot of domestic violence, a lot of disturbances around the holidays. a lot of times we see frightened children caught in the middle.

>> the gift bags were donated by dollar tree stores for police officers to distribute to families. later this morning, the city of san francisco has a suggestion for families looking for something to do after opening presents. some popular destinations are open. the bow tan call gardens features more than 8,000 plants and flowers and you can went a boat at stow lake. president obama is's. he may avoid -- president obama is in hawaii. he may come home early to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff. a plan includes proposed

projects to attract state i havers -- visitors. 7:23. moving along in the day right now, tara, you know we talked about going to the golden gate park today. there is another gift that people should know about. >> there is a perk. free parking. >> yay! >> in san francisco today. yeah, free metered parking everywhere along a -- including along the embarcadero and fisherman's wharf. no street sweeping unless that sign says seven days a week of the including holidays. that's the good news -- a week, including holidays. that's the good news. you can see traffic is moving well along all directions. we have, really not a whole lot of people out there. hopefully everybody is opening their presents right now. down in the south bay, 237, milpitas, usually we see a lot of westbound traffic on the right-hand side of your screen but really own what? three cars right now.

welcome back to "mornings on 2." well, the salvation army is making sure needy heap who are homebound will also enjoy the holiday. this morning, hundreds of volunteers will help the salvation army in san francisco deliver warm meals and christmas cheer. 4300 meals will be cooked, packaged and then brought to sign yers living alone. the christmas meal delivery program is nearly half a century old. some of the volunteers began helping out about 20 years ago. san francisco firefighters are getting ready to hand out toys to children in need this christmas. the toys were collected as part of lefty o'doul's annual toy drive. we showed you that yesterday. it ended at 2:00 this morning. as of 10:00 last night, lefty's collected about 7,000 toys. their goal was 15,000. but very nice. pope benedict made his annual christmas day address this morning.

[ applause ] >> he delivered the message at st. peter's basilica and prayed for world peace and called for an end to the violence in syria. he also urged christians to make room for god in their fast- paced lives. thousands of people are celebrating christmas in bethlehem. a midnight mass was born in nativity. the israel's tour ministry expects 75,000 people to visit which is actually a drop from last year. new this morning while troops in afghanistan may not be able to spend christmas with their families, they are still getting in the holiday spirit. u.s. and afghanistan forces celebrated the day together. hundreds of troops in kabul kicked off the day with lunch. they had turkey, everything that goes with it. soldiers had the hardest part being away from their children. >> christmas is the time when people get together and they share and we eat good food.

interstate 80 corridor in the afternoon. as of right now, chains are not require for considers on interstate 80 or highway 50 but chains are required on other state routes. interstate 40 near oklahoma city has reopened, after shutting down following a 21- car trash. this happened as a powerful storm threatens a white christmas to the plains and thunderstorms are in effect from texas to florida. police say a man was crossing broadway at hogan avenue just before 5:30 when he was hit. witnesses say the driver was involved in a speeding contest with another driver at the time. the suspect vehicle is described as black, a 1990s honda terrific, and it now has front-end damage. san leandro police are investigating a christmas eve shooting. police say they found a man in his 60s who had been shot

inside an suv on west broadmore boulevard. the man was rushed to the hospital for surgery. his condition has not been released. police have not released information about a shooter or motive. new this morning, a nurses' strike at nine bay area hospitals is over. about 5400 nurses walked off the job on capacity eve. nurse says they called the strike over health benefits, sick pay and staffing. many told us they didn't have time to finish off their christmas shopping earlier and so they came back to stores. the stores were offering new and bigger discounts. so now they can give gifts they had not considered in their budget before. >> i am like exchanging stuff and giving things that my sister actually wants. >> the malls are predicting big crowds again tomorrow when customers will be using gift

cards and exchanging gifts. some stores could discount what's left on their shelves by as much as 80% to make way for spring merchandise. happening now a very special christmas breakfast for thousands of needy families is  getting underway in san francisco. alex savidge is live there with the holiday tradition at glide memorial church. good morning, alex. >> reporter: an annual tradition here at glide. a lot of people up early, pitching in to make sure that those in need get a nice, warm meal this christmas morning. you can see these generous volunteers. they are peeling carrots and preparing the salad. and they are carving the ham and durky. i want to give you a look. this is what the deeping hall looks like. they opened this open. ham and eggs and grits on the menu. hundreds are already down there enjoying a nice hot breakfast this christmas morning. glide expects to serve 5,000

meals throughout the day. a yearly tradition on christmas and one man i talked to a short time ago, enjoying breakfast told me glide is the place he comes for the holidays. >> they have a delicious breakfast at glide on christmas and thanksgiving. i like coming here on christmas for breakfast. >> reporter: at least 600 volunteers will be coming through glide here today to do their parts to serve up the meals and they are busy right now, slicing up the turkey and the ham. breakfast, that will be served until 9:00 this morning. anyone at 9:00, they begin serving up a traditional christmas dinner. if you want to donate your time today, you are feeling anyonerrous, you are more than welcomed to come down here to glide and pitch in today. we're live this morning in san francisco, alex savage, a ktvu channel 2 news. >> very busy out there. >> very nice. >> very nice, indeed. tara is covering traffic.

petaluma, 43 in novato. here is the forecast. the line rant wants to move in -- wants to move in by 9:00. earlier models had us pretty much dry up until noontime. that's changed. this storm approaching a little bit quaker by 2:00. now this the main -- quicker by 2:00. now this is the main. shifting into the central bay by 3:00. in addition to moderate rain, could see the possibility of isolated thunderstorms and gusty conditions. winds 20, 30 miles an hour possible at times by tonight scattered showers. now, here is your extended forecast. straightening out what i mentioned a moment ago, we get scattered showers tonight, scattered showers torm morning and then we're dry. we have dry weather thursday, friday, maybe a sprinkle saturday morning, not putting it on the icon just yet. i'm hoping for dry weather through the weekend. pam? an update community is morning after two volunteers were shot and killed while

welcome back to "mornings on 2." in arizona, a u.s. airways plane caught fire on christmas eve. the flight had just arrived to phoenix from san diego when a passenger reported smelling gasoline. more than 100 passengers were

safely evacuated so the plane could be inspected. the fire was discovered during that inspection and quickly put out. authorities say a fuel leak may have caused the fire. the days after christmas, typically a time when many head up to tahoe. there is a strong danger warning about avalanches. 49-year-old steven anderson was buried for five hours by the time crews reached him and it was too late. >> the other friends that will be in our group were looking for him and probing around. but they didn't find hill. he was at the bottom of the cliff instead of the top. >> the resort said several people were skiing and snowboarding in the area when the avalanche was triggered. the avalanche center for california says the risk for more is considerable in the next 48 hours. now, there was also an avalanche at alpine meadows t was triggered by a member of the ski patrol on purpose.

one person is in critical condition after being caught in that yesterday morning. authorities say one of the patrol members on a snow safety mission threw an explosive charge to initiate the avalanche. other team members took cover but. avalanche broke much higher and wider than expected. one member was buried in the snow, airlifted to the reno hospital and the area is now closed off to the public. crews plan to keep working for a missing lake countywoman today. kimberly hazelwood left her home in upper lake on sunday night. her family said she seemed depressed. they found some of her property and closing near where she went missing. search andreas cau teams, swift water res ta, and a helicopter looked for her -- search and rescue teams, swift water rescue and a helicopter looked for her. they couldn't find her. police say two armed robbers broke into a business on monry day highway around 3:30 in the morning on sunday.

morning, where you can see flames shooting up from the roof as high as 15 feet in the air. two aerial ladders were used to spray water on the flames. firefighters believe no one was inside. but it appears two businesses were run out of the building with one suffering the brunt of the damage. >> i did a lap around the building and it looks like the back half of the building here is burned completely. the roof is gone. all of the property inside is gone, too. it looked like it was some sort of manufacturing, maybe a battery, electric-type vehicle operation. not sure as to who or what. haven't seen anybody from that business as of yet. >> reporter: here's a look at the back of the building, as you heard from that battalion chief, the roof burned off and flames ate away at the inside of the building. it's unclear what the cause of

back the water. the chp has just given its collision record for a head-on crash this morning in marin county. the highway patrol says a 350- year-old of san diego was driving the wrong -- 30-year- old of san diego was driving the wrong way on 101 when he hit a woman from petaluma. she was going the right direction. this happened north of novato at the dumps. >> medics were immediately started. upon arrival on our scene, we found two vehicles on the right shoulder, both with major front- end damage. both drivers were taken to marin general hospital. chen has been arrested on drunk driving charges. all lanes have reopened on 880 in fruitvale in oakland. at least three vehicles were involved in a crash there. all lanes were blocked for about an hour while crews worked to clean up. there are no word of any injuries there. also happening right now,

st. anthony's dining room in san francisco is filling up with delicious food and holiday gifts. thousands of people will soon start pouring in. allie rasmus is there at st. anthony's this morning with this wonderful christmas bay area tradition. >> reporter: i'm standing in the lobby of st. anthony's foundation. beme are thousands of gift bags that volunteers have put together. inside, they have hand-knitted scarfs, toiletries soap, and socks and toothbrushes. the foundation put out the call to volunteers and donors across the country to send them hand- knitted scarfs and hats and they got a huge response. they are giving out 4,000 of these today. some of these were very carefully packaged with handwrite -- handwritten notes. it took a lot of work -- work for the volunteers to get these assembled. some of them got here at 6:00. >> it's really a holiday spirit

for me to be here with my fellow elfs -- elves. >> reporter: it's busy in the kitchen. the chefs started to arrive at 5:30. people in the community donated 400 hams that will be cooked this morning. they are expecting 4,000 people to come through and get a christmas meal and gift bag. now, helping st. anthony's serve all of this food will be coaches, and players from a football team. >> having these volunteers from the military, they will be serving our country who have served five wars. 20%. >> reporter: and they say 20% of people who come in are homeless veterans, they point out that that connection is very special to have the football players helping today. now, outside, they've got all of the gift bags all assembled

florida. police in vallejo continue to search for a hit-and-run driver that critically injured a man. police say the man was crossing broadway at hogan avenue just before 5:30 when he was hit. witnesses say the driver was involved in a speed contest with another driver at the time. the suspect vehicle is described as a black 1990s honda civic with front-end damage. >> police say they found a man in his 60s who had been shot inside an suv on west broadmore boulevard last night. the man was rushed to the hospital for surnry -- surgery. his condition has not been released. police have not released information about a shooter or a possible motive. a nurses' strike at nine bay area hospitals now over. about 5400 nurses walked off the josh at christmas eve at seven sutter hospitals. nurses say they called the strike over health benefits, sick pay and staffing levels. bay area malls were filled with shoppers right up until

we have an update on the plane crash in central asia. a top commander in the kazakhstan military was among 27 people killed in the air disaster. so far, there's no word on a possible cause but the area along southern kazakhstan has

been battered by heavy snowfall, strong winds and low temperatures in recent weeks. the federal government is warning people along the west coast there will be more debris washing up from the japanese tsunami. items that have already washum, including a huge dock, small fishing boats and soccer balls. last year's disaster went about 5 million tons of debris into the pacific. scientists expect the bulk will end up in alaska, washington state and oregon. but a recent winter warning could carry the debris to the winter coastline. there's a very strong warning about the dangers of avalanches this morning heading up to the north. it comes one day after an experienced snowboarder died after getting caught in an avalanche at donner ski ranch. 49-year-old steven anderson was buried for five hours. by the time crews reached him, it was too late. >> the friends were looking for him and probing around. they didn't find him. he was at the bottom of the cliff instead of the top.
